After a day playing in the snow, come back to Solbakken and relax by the fireplace, or sooth yourself in the sauna. Cross Country Skiing
Solbakken offers complimentary Cross Country Skis
Ski right from Solbakken to the Norpine/Deer Yard trail system which has 58K of groomed ski trails. From there you can access hundreds of miles of ski trails on the Cascade River, Bally Creek, and Sugarbush trail systems.

Snowshoeing
Solbakken offers complimentary snowshoe rental
Snowshoeing is a very popular winter activity because it’s easy and you don’t need a lot of specialized equipment. And, you can do it anywhere! Strap on some snowshoes and break a trail in the deep snow. Or, head to a hiking trail where the trail may be packed down and easier to navigate. WE have some awesome hiking trails nearby. Alpine Skiing
Lutsen Mountains, the Midwest’s largest ski area, is just 5 minutes from Solbakken. It boasts 4 mountains and 95 ski runs and the Midwest’s only Gondola. Open mid-November – May. Discounted Ski & Lodging packages are available.


Fat Tire Biking
The latest winter craze is Fat Tire biking. The fat tires allows you to bike on snow-covered roads and trails. There area a couple of fat tire bike trails nearby. One is on the Norpine/Deer Yard trail system, located directly across from the resort. There are also trails at Britton Peak (20 minutes away), Pincushion Mountain (15 minutes away), and Split Rock Lighthouse State Park (50 minutes away)
Embrace Hygge
Hygge is a Norwegian word meaning “well being.” This concept is used to describe a moment or feeling that is cozy, special, comfortable, pleasurable, and relaxing. Winter is a great time to seek for Hygge, and there’s many ways to experience it here at Solbakken on Superior.
- Relax in your room or in our historic lodge in front of the fire. Read a book, do some knitting, or work on a puzzle.
- Snowshoe or cross country ski into the woods to enjoy the soft silence, and likely see some wildlife.
- Explore the many art galleries and boutiques dotted up and down the North Shore.
